One flew over the cuckoo's nest cast. One flew over the cuckoo's nest novel. One flew over the cuckoo's nest stream. It is hard to believe that the author of the book this movie is based on didn't like it. It is simply one of those classic movies.
First of all this is a very realistic film. Even more realistic than Goodfellas (1990) and that is also hard to believe because of how melodramatic it is. While Goodfellas didn't have that many intense, or dramatic moments (likely because it was narrated over so often) this movie had more than a few tense and dramatic moments, yet it was still more realistic. Why? Because of the setting: A mental institution.
Randle Mc Murphy is sent to a mental institution, because of his apparent mental disability (which is really a lie so he can get out of jail.) After spending time in the institution, he bonds with the other inmates, who actually are disabled, apart from one, The Chief, whom Randle makes a special bond with. During his time there, he manages to get them out of the institution, for a few hours, on a fishing trip. He throws a nigh time party, in which they all get drunk. And he rallies the patients to become rebellious and rise against the staff, and one nurse particularly. While Randle represents chaos in this film, Nurse Mildred Ratched represents order. Very strict order at that.
What is described here is just the tip of the iceberg of this film. Despite it's severely depressing tone, the plot draws you in, and makes your root for Randle and The Chief. This is one of those few films that I would call, very intense, and very realistic, as many realistic films, contain a lot of slow paced conversations, where as in this there's tension most of the time. For that reason it's one of my favorites and for that reason I give it a 10/10.
